Zeeland is the Netherlands most visitors never see — a province of islands, dikes, and the Delta Works engineering that reshaped the country’s relationship with the sea after the catastrophic 1953 flood, with beaches that feel more North Sea wild than anything near Amsterdam.
Days 1–2: Middelburg
Zeeland’s historic capital has a genuinely intact medieval abbey complex and a compact old town that gets a fraction of Amsterdam’s foot traffic — the Saturday market on the Markt square is worth timing a visit around.
Day 3: The Delta Works
The Neeltje Jans visitor center explains the storm surge barrier that protects the entire province — one of the largest civil engineering projects in the world, and a genuinely different kind of sightseeing from canal-and-windmill Netherlands.
Day 4: Domburg and the Coast
Domburg’s wide, dune-backed beach has drawn Dutch painters for over a century — walk or cycle the coastal path north toward Westkapelle for views that look more like the Atlantic coast than the North Sea most people picture.
