Lisse and Keukenhof

By Isla Quinn

Sand. That is the secret under the colour. Wikipedia says Lisse’s sandy soil proved ideal for flower bulbs, and that the town’s economy changed once growers saw it.

Where it sits

Lisse is in South Holland, in the Duin- en Bollenstreek, Holland’s main flower-growing region. Wikipedia gives the municipality’s area as 16.05 square kilometres and its 2021 population as 22,982. It says Lisse was first documented in 1198. The wider Bollenstreek, Wikipedia’s article on bulb cultivation says, stretches from Leiden to Haarlem across the line between North and South Holland. Bulbs, it says, grow on sandy soil near the dunes, and on sandy clay behind the dunes on the South Holland islands.

How the estates went

The Lisse article says every estate in the town except Keukenhof was cleared to make way for bulb cultivation. It says Lisse now sends bulb flowers to more than a hundred countries.

Keukenhof

Wikipedia says Keukenhof covers 32 hectares. It was set up in 1949 by bulb growers and flower exporters, and opened to the public in 1950 with more than 300,000 visitors in its first year. The estate is older. Wikipedia says it was originally a fifteenth-century hunting estate with Countess Jacoba van Beieren, who lived from 1401 to 1436, among its residents, and that the grounds were later a kitchen garden providing produce and game. Keukenhof means kitchen garden. The landscape architects Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul redesigned the estate in 1857, and Wikipedia says their English-style parks remain the foundation of the gardens.

The article says the park is open for an eight-week display from mid-March to mid-May, with the peak near mid-April, and that about 7 million bulbs are planted each autumn. It gives 1.4 million visitors in 2025, about 26,500 a day in season.

What else is in Lisse

Wikipedia lists the Museum De Zwarte Tulp, which it says shows the history of the Dutch bulb-growing region, and notes Castle Keukenhof and Huys Dever. It says that each spring the Bollenstreek flower parade goes through the main streets. Wikipedia says the colourful fields can be seen around April.

What it means for a visit

Our reading is that the best way to see the Bollenstreek is as a landscape of sand, ditches and straight lines, with Keukenhof as the show window. The sources give April for fields and mid-March to mid-May for the garden. Dates move with the weather and the year, so check the park’s current season and any rules before you plan.
